Sub-alpine fir

Abies lasiocarpa

The sub-alpine fir (Abies lasiocarpa) is a medium to large tree growing from 25-60 ft. tall. It has gorgeous, blue-green needles and that unmistakable “Christmas tree” smell. Native to the Rockies of the US and Canada, it can make a nice tree for a back yard or acreage. These trees are highly adaptable and can find ways to perform well under even the most adverse of conditions- as can be easily attested to by anyone who hikes in BC or southern Alberta! Subalpine fir has dark green, gently ascending branches and the needles are soft and luxurious. It will do best in full sun with good drainage and the dark purple cones it produces are surprisingly beautiful.
