Bur oak

Quercus macrocarpa

The hardiest oak known is the bur oak (Quercus macrocarpa). This species ranges from Manitoba through eastern Canada and south all the way to Texas. It has ridged, scaly bark and will occasionally turn pale brown or gold in the fall, but usually there is little to no autumn color. It is tolerant of pollution, poor soil, and has virtually no pest or disease issues. It can grow anywhere from 60-120 ft. tall and live for hundreds of years. Hardy to zone 1.
