Narrowleaf cottonwood

Populus angustifolia

Populus angustifolia is found throughout the entire western half of North America. This somewhat pyramid shaped tree is occasionally cultivated. It has narrow leaves, bold yellow fall color, and a strong preference for damp or wet areas. It prefers full sun and should reach about 50 feet.

Trees are either male or female, with female trees producing copius amounts of poplar fluff seasonally which can be a nuisance. They will not be fertile unless a male tree is nearby.

It is fast growing, short lived, and has an agressive root system. As such, it is not recommended near structures as there are better choices available. This trait does make it a useful plant for erosion control in unpopulated areas. Since it is so robust and hybridizes freely, it is often used as a parent in poplar breeding programs.
