Wild ginger
Asarum canadensis
Native throughout North America and growing as far north as Alaska. The leaves are large and kidney-shaped, slightly velvety to the touch. Small, triangular flowers that sit near the ground are produced in spring, but you will have to go looking for them or you won’t see them. This is a low spreading groundcover that likes a fertile soil. It is slow to get going but once it does, it grows quite rapidly. It will also tolerate dry shade once it established.
