Tiger lily

Lilium tigrinum

Most of the lilies in our gardens today are Asiatic hybrids, but there is still a place for the old fashioned tiger lily. Flowering in mid to late summer, it has very distinctive orange flowers that are spotted in black and have recurving petals. Stems grow 3-4 ft. tall and tiny bulbs often form in the axils of the leaves.

It is a great lily for extending your lily flowering season (as it blooms a bit later) and if you can bear to cut them, they are fabulous material for your favourite vase.

Although orange is the normal colour, there are also white and pink flowered forms of tiger lily. All will multiply where they are happy and require a sunny, well drained spot with reasonable moisture and fertility, though they are quite adaptable and can handle dryer conditions once established. Tiger lilies are inexpensive and clump up quickly.
