Black ash

The black ash (Fraxinus nigra) is another native of North America (from eastern Manitoba east). It this is one of the slower growing species. It reaches an average height of 50 ft., but 80 ft. is not unheard of. Black ash has beautiful, pinnate foliage that turns a stunning brilliant yellow in the Autumn. It is very drought tolerant once established, but prefers good moisture and appreciates fertile soil. ‘Fall Gold’ is a particularly compact, vigorous variety that was selected in Manitoba. It is much used as a street and boulevard tree. Zone 2.
