Grape juice

easy

Mmm.... is there anything better than home-made grape juice? If you have grapes – green or purple both work well – it’s easy to make a delicious juice.

Here's how:

  • Stem and wash the grapes. Place grapes in a large stainless steel saucepan. Pour enough boiling water over to just cover the grapes. Bring the mixture to a simmer for about 30 minutes or until the skins are soft.
  • Remove from the heat and allow to cool slightly. Strain the mixture through a colander lined with jelly cloth or cheesecloth into a large container.
  • Refrigerate overnight to allow the sediment to settle.
  • Carefully pour the juice into another container avoiding the sediment. For a clearer juice, try pouring it a second time through a coffee filter.
  • Have a taste... it probably does not need sugar, but if it does, sweeten to taste.
  • Juice keeps for 3 – 5 days in the fridge. You can also freeze it in glass jars with a secure lid for several months. If freezing the juice, leave 2 cm (1/2”) headspace before sealing the jar. Drink it straight up or add a splash of sparkling water if desired.
  • The sediment and mash leftover from making juice can be composted.
