Didn't quite get it all planted? Overwintering hardy potted plants
There was a big sale at the greenhouse...
We all do this – sometimes temptation at the greenhouse is hard to resist! Potted perennials, shrubs and trees simply won’t survive winter exposure left above ground, even in a garage or shed - the roots need protection.
Instead of tossing them in the compost, try this: find an empty spot in your annual garden or vegetable bed – dig a hole as deep as the pot, bury the pot up to the rim and give it some water. Mound some mulch around - but not on top of - the plants. Make sure the plant tag is poking up where you can see it so you can find it again in spring. Your plants stand a much better chance of surviving the winter until you can find a permanent spot for them next spring.
