Shadows are starting to creep into a garden fully lit by sunlight.

Considerations of sunlight on your no till garden

No till gardening is a system of gardening where the soil is mulched to prevent soil erosion, conserve water and reduce the pressure of weeds. Any garden with vegetables or fruit in it needs 8 hours of direct sunlight to be successful.

Direct sunlight for any garden space is incredibly important for the success of your vegetable plants. All vegetable plants need direct sunlight although some are cool season plants and they will bolt if they get too much heat/sun.

Vegetable plants need at least 8 hours of direct sunlight. Watch the space you are considering for your garden and see where the shadows fall on it during the day. If it's in a heavily treed area with a lot of shadow falling on the garden, then you may not have enough sunlight there for warm season crops like tomatoes, potatoes, corn and peppers.

If you have a choice, run your rows north to south rather than east to west. When the rows run north to south, the sun does not shade the plants immediately beside each other. If the only direction you can place rows is east to west, just keep in mind that the plants can throw a shadow on each other so plant your plants slightly further apart than the seed package recommends.
