Cow parsnip or wild chervil

 A. sylvestris is also known as cow parsnip or wild chervil. Normally a plant of about 3 ft. with unpleasantly scented small white flowers, the form called ‘Raven’s Wing’ is outstanding. Smaller and more compact than the species, the entire plant is a deep, inky purple with a lustrous sheen. The foliage is finely divided (like feathers!) and it is fabulous for providing contrast and texture in containers. It will flower in the second season and comes reasonably true from seed but after several seasons, each generation may becoming progressively less and less purple. Best to buy fresh seed when it’s available.
