Zygadenus elegans

A gorgeous plant in the lily family, it forms a lush, small clump and grows 1-2 ft. tall. The leaves are soft green with a pale, greyish cast and they are quite grass-like. The tall stems produce the most beautiful, small, starry-white flowers all marked with an enigmatic, apple-green kiss in the center. They are held in small clusters and wave and move delicately in the wind. It grows in a wide variety of habitats with plants on the western side of the continent usually being smaller in size than those in the east, but having more densely clustered flowers. It has a preference for moist areas but can also sometimes be found in dry grasslands, though plants tend to be quite short and will not look their best. Look for it in damp meadows, ditches, pastures, and grassy areas. It often grows in large groups. Be aware that this plant is extremely poisonous if eaten.
