Oat milk

An inexpensive non-dairy milk you can make at home

Oat milk is a creamy non-dairy milk that can be used as a substitute for cow's milk in many recipes. It's also incredibly simple to make at home!

Ingredients

  • 1 cup rolled oats

  • 3-4 cups water (less water makes creamier milk)

  • Pinch of salt

Directions

  1. Add oats, water, and salt to a high speed blender. Cover with lid and a towel to ensure that the millk doesn't splash.

  2. Blend on high speed for 30 seconds to 1 minute, or until mixture seems well combined. The mixture is going to be strained, so it doesn't need to be entirely smooth.

  3. Cover a large mixing bowl or pitcher with a very thin towel or a clean t-shirt. Strain the mixture through twice, discarding the waste in between.

  4. Transfer to an airtight container and refrigerate.

Tips

  • The starches in oat milk can make it slimy. You want to avoid overblending or heating the oat milk, and you don't want to soak the oats in advance before making it.

  • The oat milk may seperate in the fridge. Just give it a good shake before using to mix it up again.

Variations

  • Add a tablespoon of maple syrup or sugar, and a splash of vanilla to the blender to sweeten

  • Add two tablespoon of cocoa powder along with the sweetner to make chocolate milk

  • Add 1/4 cup berries to make berry milk

Storage

  • Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days
